Every day is a challenge when you are enrolled in an addiction recovery program. Transitioning back to health with the help of rehab and detox is a tough journey. After its completion, you may stop substance abuse and live a normal life. But the chances of a relapse are high each day. Several triggering situations increase cravings. This ultimately leads to a relapse.
An important thing to note here is that this is common. You are not alone in this journey and the only way you succeed is by facing the odds. Stressful times will continue to disrupt routine life but it is important for you to track them and prevent relapse. Take a look at the steps to avert them
-
Know the Signs
It is important to realize the signs that could lead to a relapse. Regardless of how well you do post-recovery, the possibility of returning to substance is equal each day. However, there are some indications that you must look out for as they are the clear signs of a relapse waiting to happen. These signs occur in stages.
-
Emotional Relapse
This stage is the beginning where there is a slight inclination towards substance abuse. The mind starts to divert towards the thought of substance abuse. This is expressed through several emotions. This includes isolation, anxiety, mood swings, rage, and being defensive.
-
Mental Relapse
This begins through some fleeting thoughts of using drugs/substances again. Very early on, there is a constant debate in the mind about whether to restart substance abuse or not. This gradually leads to solid consideration of substance abuse. The signs include-
- Getting “positively nostalgic” about substance abuse days.
- Fondly remembering the substances and memories related to them.
- Pleasant reminders like friends, things, and locations you used to consume alcohol or drugs.
- Strategically plan the relapse and recovery on your own.
-
Physical Relapse
This stage becomes a living nightmare for anyone who is in their recovery stage. This is where s/he finally resorts to substance abuse. This stage is where the person hits an all-time low.
Now what you need to know is that you must get alert at the emotional stage. By the time you reach the mental relapse stage, the process only speeds up. Therefore, it is imperative that you recognize the signs and act accordingly.
-
Be aware of your feelings
Regardless of what you feel, it is important that you stay in touch with them. Apart from self-awareness, you must have your close friend or family member remain updated on your mental state. Do not shy away from expressing what you feel.
-
Remain Busy
Chances of relapse go significantly high when you have time on your hands. Make sure you are occupied for the majority of the day. Remaining idle would only trigger sobriety; leading to temptation. Stay busy with your work, find a new hobby, join a fitness center— anything that makes your day worthwhile. Said that, make sure to make time for your family. Their support plays an immense role here and regardless of your regime, you must make time for your family.
-
Do not skip group meetings
Somedays you feel more than alright. You feel better and almost close to normal. As remarkable as that is, it is not an excuse to skip the support group sessions. These meetings are organized for your betterment. You meet like-minded people and get encouraged to do better. Skipping one meeting will turn into a toxic habit of missing it every time. Make sure to attend the meetings especially when you feel discouraged (remember the emotional relapse stage).
-
Have an emergency backup
Whether you struggle or not, you must always be prepared. Always keep a list of people ready for you to contact when you feel discouraged and tempted. Every day is not the same, and you must be prepared with a list of activities to do when you feel the struggle growing heavy on you.
Your daily and consistent efforts will help you through addiction recovery. Â Amidst this, relapse is a common phenomenon and it could easily happen to anyone. The tips mentioned above help you prevent it and come out stronger.
