There are some days when life hits you hard. It is normal as what is life without challenges? But what if the pain lingers? What if the stress does not seem to go away? We often have a reason behind stress and anxiety. But some days the ache does not have a reason and those days turn into months. And there is a constant feeling of sadness that engulfs you without any forewarning.

The worst part is that hollow feelings of hopelessness stay for long and interfere with our mindsets. This reflects in our actions and thoughts. It hurts to admit that this is, after all, depression.

How depression feels

The symptom of depression varies from person to person. It is because the underlying trauma behind depression differs. It depends on the gender as well. And therefore, the feeling varies from person to person. But it is definitely not close to feelings of sadness. It is beyond that.  Some of the common feelings are-

  • Difficulty In focusing

A depressed person will find it harder to concentrate.  They are unable to decide wisely. It is difficult for them to finish a book or start a new show.  Thinking clearly seem taxing for them. This is why they can hardly finish what they started. You might also perceive yourself as slow while moving and talking.

  • Absence of self-esteem

The feeling of failure or worthlessness is common in depressed people. Their entire attention is laid on toxic patterns and negative experiences. This eventually makes them sadder and oblivious to positive events. This way they mostly run low on self-esteem and confidence.

  • Insomnia

Falling asleep and remaining asleep is tough for people fighting depression. Despite extreme exhaustion, it will be difficult for you to get sleep. There is another factor to it, some may sleep for long hours and yet not feel energized.

  • Fatigue

In support of the above statement, there is constant tiredness in the body. It lingers throughout the day and there is hardly any relief. Energy levels are non-existent. The feeling of exhaustion and fatigue do not get healed despite the efforts. People often have to deal with constant pain, body aches, nausea, etc.

  • Substance abuse

Depression is hard to fight.  And sometimes little moments of ecstasy give one pleasure and strength to live better. Some people resort to toxic habits to cope with the symptoms of depression. Some tend to overeat, others might drink alcohol, smoke, or do drugs. As much as it is treated as a coping tool, they are injurious to health. It gives rise to obesity and other medical problems.

  • There is no joy

A person with depression will be cut off from most people. They will no longer enjoy things in life. Nothing in the world makes them elated. There is no moment that makes them feel alive or gives them hope. You are irritated at the slightest little thing. Therefore there is a persistent feeling of resentment and displeasure.

While there are more symptoms and reasons that you can relate to, depression needs to be dealt with. There are therapy sessions and addiction treatment that help you cope with depression. Often depression escalates due to medical reasons and toxic patterns. It is a never-ending vicious circle.

A recovery program, in this case, helps you heal and overcome depression.  What you need to realize is, that depression is an illness. And every illness has a cure. And therefore, you must not overlook the signs and symptoms of depression and get them treated.  Depression requires therapeutic attention and is a lot more than continuous sadness.
